Worsted or woollen: what’s the difference?

Both are wool yarns, but the way the fibres are prepared before spinning gives them very different characters.
Worsted
Worsted yarns are made from longer fibres that are combed so they lie parallel, removing short fibres along the way. The result is a smooth, strong, lustrous yarn with crisp stitch and weave definition — ideal for fine-gauge knitwear, hosiery and suiting.
Woollen
Woollen yarns are carded rather than combed, so the fibres stay jumbled and trap more air. They are loftier, warmer and fuzzier, but less smooth and less strong for the same weight.
Which should you choose?
If you need clean definition, durability and a refined surface, choose worsted. Not sure? Ask our team — we are happy to advise on the right construction for your end use.
